Kaley Bag: The Emerging ‘Burna Boy’ of African Hip Hop

It is only much recently that many Nigerians and Africans began to appreciate Burnaboy’s music. But for those of us who deeply appreciate conscious music, we have fallen in love with his art way before now.

I will tell you a little bit about Burnaboy and let you know why he is in a class of his own in the Nigerian music industry. Burnaboy is the only Afrobeat artiste in Nigeria who successfully packages conscious music in a way that it is loved and appreciated by the generality of the people.

His top rivals (you know them) mainly sing about love, women, and such issues with little or no beneficial content. But check out Burna’s music. Dude talks about important social issues. He doesn’t just drop music for people to dance to or merely sing along. He educates and informs with his art.

This is where I liken young fast-rising Sierra-Leonean rapper, Kaley Bag to Burnaboy. In fact, when I first heard his track titled, ‘D Sai Wae Ah Komot’ I was blown away by his message and the passion with which he communicated the plights of his people, who are subjected to the slums of Sierra Leone. And just like Burnaboy’s songs, the song doesn’t just address social issues in a bland and boring way, it has great rhythm and highly enjoyable melody.
